Living without Bias

We all see the world through our experiences and before I tended to believe that people will act the way I expect them. But as the time passed, I realized that everyone is acting differently.

Dear Toastmasters and Guests, I would like to call your attention on differences today. I want to brake the bias that is blocking our relationships and interactions.
Lets go to the days when I was in Muscat- Oman, I will tell you about couple of my experiences.

One day in the company club I was waiting in the queue in order to buy an ice cream and an Omani boy I met several times the other days came closer to me and whispered…! ‘’ Can I buy your ice-cream?’’. I accepted his treat, then we both turned back to our tables. The thing was to me maybe he was going to share it with his friends that he interacted with me or he had a crush on me.  But why would I judge? How can I know, can I read other people’s mind? Maybe it was the thing that he wanted to show how hospitable Omani people are. If he was Scandinavian he would probably come and sit our table because he liked me. But again how I can make this generalization? Behaviors yes can change culture to culture but can change person by person in their grown up environment. And we all know that, my behavior is affected by my family education. What do you think?

And now lets go to the last week of my  Oman journey, the day when I went to the historical fish-market, land of Sinbad.

There I saw a fisherman was bringing water from the sea which is at least 500 meters far away, and the temperature had reached 40-degree-plus conditions that time. There was water everywhere, pouring. I learned that in many years they were struggling because there was lack of water and it was because they knew the importance of finite resources. No judge, no bias, but I was increasing my awareness continuously.

Now, lets go to my high school years, I was influenced by the book named Sophie's World. This book is one of the books my mind hooked on. It starts with a story…

One morning, mom, dad and little Thomas, aged 2 or 3, are having breakfast in the kitchen. After a while mom gets up and goes over to the kitchen sink, and.. Dad.. yes, Dad.. flies up, floats around under the ceiling while Thomas sits watching. He points up at his father and says: ‘’ Daddy’ s flying!’’ Dad does so many strange things, such everyday shaves with a funny machine, sticks his head under the hood of the car and comes up black in the face.

Now, it’ s mom’s turn. She hears what Thomas says and turns around. She drops the jam jar on the floor and screams. Most adult accept the World as a matter of course. And the matter she was shocked is something we experienced long before and it becomes habit, that people can not fly. But what about the World itself? The World is also floating in the space.

Sadly, it is not only force of gravity we get used to as we grow up.  By learning we are having lots of phenomena, phenomenon of geography, history, science, art, and then we have more bias. Try to eliminate those are blocking our relationships, interactions.

Now it is your choose to be like a child who has no bias, who accepts differences.
